Doug
says:
Doug kept pace beside the gurney as they burst through the trauma doors. "On my count-one, two, three," he said as the team transferred the woman onto the trauma be in one smooth motion. "Airway?" Dough asked as the nurse said patent. "Breathing?" he asked and she said diminished on the left. "Circulation?" he asked as she replied pulse one-thirty and her pressure is eighty-four over fifty. Doug nodded once. "Two large-bore IVs. Type and cross four units. Trauma labs. Keep he C-spine immobilized," Doug said as the room sprang into motion. Doug then leaned over the patient, keeping his voice calm despite the urgency. "Can you tell me your name?" he asked her as he watched her lips parted and she barely said the name Emily. "Good, Emily. I'm Dr. Ross. I need you stay with me," he told her as her eyes drifted shut as she whispered Emily again. Doug then gave her shoulder a firm tap. "Open your eyes for me," he told her, which she managed a weak groan. "That's it," he said with a smile on his face. It was then that a nurse began to cut away the last of the blood-soaked jacket, which she then noticed and told Doug about the deep laceration to the left flank. "Pack it and apply direct pressure," Doug said as he immediately looked at the wound. It was then Haleh, who was watching the monitor, said that her pressure was dropping and that it was seventy-eight systolic. Dough's expression tightened. "Hang the O-negative," he yelled as the nurse said it's on its way. He then glanced toward the foot of the bed. "Where the hell is Benton?" Doug shouted and as if on cue, Petter Benton strode through the doors, pulling on a pair of gloves as he asked what they had. Doug's eyes met his. "Female, mid-twenties. Hight speed MVC. Possible spinal injury, left flank wound, and hypotensive despite fluids," he told Beton as he was already starting to examine her wounds. That's when Benton said that it could be splenic or even renal. Doug nodded as Benton asked FAST. "Ultrasound's coming," Doug said as Benton looked up. He then went on to say that if it's positive, she was going upstairs.
"No argument here," Doug told him as he turned back to Emily, keeping one hand lightly on her arm. "Emily, listen to me. We're going to take care of you, but I need you to stop fighting," he told her as her eyes opened just enough to find his. And for a brief moment, she was able to focus just on him. Doug offered a reassuring smile. "That's better. Stay with us," he told her softly. From the neighboring trauma bay came the muffled sound of Mark Green giving another order, followed by the metallic clink of instruments being laid out for a chest tube. Doug glanced toward the door separating the rooms for only a heartbeat before returning his attention to Emily. "We've got two trauma bays running," Doug told Benton just as the ultrasound machine rolled in. Benton didn't look up from the ultrasound probe the moment it arrived. He told Doug that they had better save both. "Agreed," Dough said as he turned back to look at Mark and how much trouble he was having. Benton could tell that Doug was a bit worried about Mark. Benton said he could handle Emily if Doug wanted to go check on Mark and make sure he didn't need any help. Doug nodded as he was taking off his gloves and throwing them on the floor, he went through the door that separated the two trauma rooms. After walking into the second trauma room, a nurse began to help him put a fresh pair of gloves on as Doug began to speak to Mark. "Okay Mark," Doug said as he made his way over to the patient after he had fresh gloves on. "Take a deep breath," he said as he could see the worry on Mark's face as he was concentrating with everything he had. Mark took a couple of deep breaths and then began to fill Doug in on what was going on as Kerry ungloved and went to the other trauma room to check on Emily, the one that Doug and now Benton were working on. Emily was a bit more stable and was getting ready to move upstairs for observation and more tests before deciding the best course of action. "Easy does it," Doug said he watched Mark start to retube the man on the table with Doug's help. "There, it's finally in," Doug said as he looked at Mark. "Upstairs or OR?" Doug asked Mark.

"Looks like it," Doug chuckled as the first gurney burst through the doors seconds later. Both Mark and Doug were on it before Kerry could say anything. Mark and Doug were gowning up as the paramedics were wheeling him in. Once they were done with that, Doug started asking questions to the paramedics. Doug and Mark were moving the male into Trauma Two. After Doug got done talking to the paramedic, he turned to Mark and repeated what he was told. "Thirty-two-year-old male passenger on the train. Blunt force trauma, possible internal bleeding. BP's dropping—eighty over palp," Doug told Mark. Mark then shook his head as they were moving him as quickly as possible. They finally got the male into Trauma Two room. Several other doctors and nurses, including Carol was working on the man, making sure that his vitals didn't drop. It was then that Doug got out the man's wallet and began to read it. "His name is Matthew Johnson," Doug told everyone as he laid his wallet aside as Doug was snapping on gloves. "You always pick the easy ones, huh?" he asked Mark with a playful smile on his face.
Mark huffed a quiet breath through his nose. "Keeps me humble," Mark replied to Doug, who was now chuckling as he was reaching for a stethoscope. As Doug was busy listening to Matthew's chest, Mark began to I want blood ready—type and cross, now," Mark said without hesitation. It was Kerry that spoke up first. She told him that she was already had blood on standby after she crossed matched it once she got the type of blood that Matthew had running through his veins. Mark leaned over the patient as they transferred him, hands quick but precise. "Hey—hey, stay with me," he said, voice steady as he checked pupils. Uneven. Not good. It was then that Doug realized what was going on in his chest and began to speak to Mark about what he was hearing. It was then that Mark put on his own stethoscope and began to listen to the man's chest, that was when Mark frowned and looked over at Doug. "Chest sounds diminished on the left," Doug added, as he looked over at Mark, knowing what they needed to do. "It sounds like a possible pneumothorax," Doug told Mark, which Mark agreed and then began to speak to everyone once more. "Let' s not wait—prep for needle decompression," Mark told the nurse, though the nurse was once step ahead of Mark, who was handing over the kit before Mark was even finished speaking. The room tightened around the moment, everything narrowing to the patient, the problem, the solution. Mark didn't hesitate to do the procedure and decompress Matthew's chest, though they needed to get him off the gurney first. Doug glanced at him and then began to speak to everyone. "On my mark," Doug said to everyone as they were getting ready to move him from the gurney to the trauma table. One Matthew was off the gurney and onto the trauma table, Doug turned with a flicker of that same unspoken rhythm passing between them. After moving him, Doug looked over at Mark and began to speak to him. "You got this?" he asked knowing that another ambulance was on its way. Mark nodded once. Doug then took off his gown and his gloves and went to wait for the next the next ambulance to pull in, which it was backing in as Doug was starting to gown up again as the ambulance was just about done backing up.

Elizabeth Greene had just gotten up and was slowly moving around. She knew that Mark was already up and had gone to work, though she wished he would slow down a bit. But she also knew that he loved helping people, so she knew that slowing down wasn't in his plans. But that just made her love him more. So, after getting awake and getting some coffee, she went to wake Rachel for school. Once Rachel was up and getting herself dressed, Elizabeth went and fixed breakfast, though she was just going to eat a bagel with some cream cheese. She fixed Rachel a quick bowl of cereal. Rachel finally got dressed and grabbed her backpack and then went to eat her breakfast. While Rachel was eating her cereal, Elizabeth went to get herself dressed and ready to start the day. Finally, Elizabeth emerged from hers and Mark's bedroom, ready to go to work, while Rachel was putting her bowl in the sink.
Finally, after about an hour and a half, everyone was finally out of the house. Rachel was at the bus stop just in time for the bus to show up. And Elizabeth was finally on her way to the hospital, which with traffic, it took a little longer than she wanted. Finally, after about another hour and a half, Elizabeth walked through the front door of the hospital. That is where she saw her husband Mark, reading over a new chart. She walked up to the nurses station and slammed her things on the counter as she turned and looked at Mark. "You know, I should have called in today," she told him both joking and yet serious. "This morning as not only been a disaster, but Rachel almost missed the bus again," she told Mark. Then she switched from her wife and mother mode to her doctor mode. "So, what have you got? Anything serious?" she asked him.

After having lunch with his good friend Mark, Doug got up and went to put his tray away. He got rid of his trash and after putting his tray with the other dirty ones. Then he went and got a refill on his soda before heading back to work. Once all that was done, he glanced back at Mark and then just shook his head. Doug and Mark had not only been good friends, but they had chemistry, especially in the ER, even though they liked to tease each other from time to time. Once Doug walked back up to the ER, he did his rounds and even did some patients that he was scheduled to see. But it wasn't until a new flash that came on the TV that said a train had derailed and all firefighters and ambulances were already on the scene. That's when Doug knew they were about to get slammed.
So, Doug downed a few more drinks of soda and then threw it away. And as Kerry was going around yelling orders as everybody was getting ready. Doug didn't see Mark and was soon running down towards the hall to the cafeteria. Doug then busted through the door and looked around. He didn't see Mark, so Doug went to the one other place he thought that Mark might be, which was in the on-call room sleeping. So, Doug ran to the on-call room and slammed the door open. He could see that Mark had just fallen asleep and even though Doug really didn't want to wake him up, since he knew that Mark had been pulling more shifts than anyone. But he also knew they were about to get slammed and Doug had no choice. "You Mark! You need to get up now!" Doug told him. "A train just derailed and we are about to get slammed. Rise and shine!" Doug said as he then left to go get himself ready.

"Hey, we are doctors," Dough said. "We have to look out for each other or else we are no use to anybody," he added as he went on to change the subject to other things Mark had just told him. "Well, there's only one way to find out," Dough said laughing and then going onto the subject of Kerry. "Like I said, I'll handle Kerry," he said with a smile. "You know I have a way with women," he added wit a laugh and then took another couple of sips of his drink before finishing off his lunch.
Once Doug has his lunch ate and his mouth was empty of both food and drink, he moved his tray over to the side, where his magazine sat and began to slowly sip his drink as he went deep in thought. Doug finally broke the silence between him and Mark."How is Rachel and Elizabeth by the way?" he asked Mark as he reflected on his own love life and the woman that he let get away. Then he took another couple drinks, almost drinking all of it in two drinks. Then he smiled as he continued to speak to Mark. "Hey, don't worry about it," he said replying to Mark's thanks. "I know you would, or at least I would like to think you would, do the same thing for me," Dough said as he finished off his drink with a big ahh sound at the end. Then Doug put his cup on his tray and looked up at the clock, knowing that they probably should get back to work, even thuggh right now things are very quiet, which always meant that something big and bad was coming there way and very soon too. Doug let out a sigh as he looked around and then back at Mark. "So, I guess I better get my handsome face back to work," he said with a smirk. "I don't want all those pretty nurses getting lonely and sad because I'm not around," Dough added still smiling. "You, my friend," Doug said as he got up from the table and picked up his tray. "Go home and rest, catch up with the family, sleep," he said and soon Doug was throwing away his garbage and putting his tray up before leaving the cafe. |
